S106: Collective Cooling: Incorporating Cool Roofs into Green Building Systems

Speakers

Sherry Hao, Administrative Manager, Cool Roof Rating Council

James Hoff, Research Director, CEIR

Since the inception of the green building movement, the roofing industry has been active in developing sustainable solutions to reduce the environmental impact of buildings. During this presentation, two leading roofing non-profit organizations will provide an up-to-date assessment of the latest practices and technologies that will influence the sustainable roofs - and sustainable buildings - of the future.

Leading off the discussion, Ms. Sherry Hao of the Cool Roof Rating Council will review how cool roofs are a simple, elegant solution to decrease cooling loads, increase occupant comfort and address climate change. During this presentation, participants will learn about the energy performance properties of cool roofs used to identify the appropriate product for a project and learn how cool roofs can be used to complement and enhance other sustainable roofing measures, such as PV systems and green living roofs.

Following the cool roofing discussion, Dr. Jim Hoff of the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing will review a comprehensive sustainable rating system for roofs called RoofPoint.\” Organized around four primary categories of energy, materials, water and life-cycle, RoofPoint provides a comprehensive road map for the evaluation and assessment of sustainable roofing systems. During this presentation, participants will learn about the structure of the RoofPoint rating system which is currently available in a pilot program across North America.
