S706: Green Globes CIEB/CIEB Healthcare Two Sustainable Alternatives for Existing Buildings

Speakers

Erin Shaffer, Vice President, Green Building Initiative

John Park, , US Veterans Affairs

Green Globes, an online rating and assessment tool for new construction and existing buildings -  provides an ongoing continuum to not only design, quantify and improve new projects and major renovations but to measure a building’s performance as well. Using the Continual Improvement of Existing Building tool (CIEB) Green Globes has made huge advancements in the certification of healthcare facilities.  Recently, after certifying 21 VA hospitals the GBI was awarded a separate contract to use the newly released Existing Building for Healthcare tool on 173 hospital assessments.  These assessments were followed by several dozen Green Globes Healthcare certifications. To that end Green Globes developed a CIEB healthcare module to meet the requirements of the VA project and to offer a Green Globes product that met the needs of the healthcare industry.

This session will address the existing Green Globes CIEB tool and the advancements that it has made in its new CIEB Healthcare tool with a relative case study about a healthcare facility. Not only does this new rendition of Green Globes help exercise good management practices that are so essential in a healthcare setting, but it helps keep the building in compliance with accreditation standards.  The VA activity and the fact that using Green Globes help position hospitals and other Government agencies to meet the \“Guiding Principles\” sets Green Globes apart as a dominant force in healthcare sustainability.
