S703: Knowledge Management in BIM

The basic principle of the presentation is the discussion of how to leverage the Specifier within a project by enhancing their role to more than just writing specifications, and handing them the responsibility of managing all of the information or “Content” in a project. “Content” is a loose term, but encompasses not just the components, assemblies and Systems in a BIM, but further, all of the associated documentation as well. From the performance and usage attributes in a BIM, to the pages of a specification, to the facilities management database, the information is really all the same. It is simply a matter of providing the relevant pieces of information at different points in the project. Having an individual (or team) that is responsible for this information from pre-planning through commissioning and beyond can provide owners with a true ‘as-built’ model that not only captures what happened at the end of the project, but can also document which changes were made, when, and more importantly, why.
