S103: Sustainable Lessons from Preservation and Ecology

Speakers

Paul Woolford, Senior Vice President, HOK

Todd See, Senior Vice President, WSP Flack & Kurtz

The project preserves Albert Kahn-designed aircraft hangars in Pearl Harbor, creating an innovative historic landmark. Participants will learn ways to elevate existing structures to rival new buildings; employ sustainability methods designed for the local ecology, resulting in 50% energy savings; and integrated processes to engage the team. Presenters will discuss:

*processes used to achieve LEED Gold certification while promoting NOAA’s mission

*methodology employed in balancing preservation and sustainability;

*applicability to aging and historic structures; and

*environmental solutions necessitated by NOAA’s responsibilities.

Todd See, Principal-in-Charge, MEP Engineering and Sustainability Design, will illustrate the sustainability approach. Discussion will provide a model for high-yield results through passive systems designed around site ecology; and for load reduction, efficient systems, energy recovery, and self-generation. Performance data, results and post occupancy evaluations from completed projects will be included.

Paul Woolford, Design Architect, will address the role an integrated design process plays in implementing an organizational vision, focusing on the elements necessary to design premium sustainability while preserving historic sites. He will outline how improvements to organizational efficiency and sustainable interventions can preserve historic fabric better than traditional approaches.
