S402: The Wikification of Design: Cloud based project delivery
Speakers
Dennis Shelden, Chief Technology Officer, Gehry Technologies

In this presentation we will show how distributed group authorship is transforming 3D design, creating new opportunities, innovations, and competitive pressures. The trends require new working methods for globally distributed teams, on heterogenous software to produce single, unified design models. These systems are quite similar to existing group sourcing\” practices, for example wikis, social networks, and distributed open-source software. In fact the creation of integrated 3D models is closely related to source control systems used in complex computer code.
Over the last four years, Gehry Technologies has been extensively using source control systems for the delivery 3D models of increasingly complex projects. The projects range from a few users to a few hundred users, across broad ranges of disciplines and geographies. We will showcase three projects by leading design firms in which GT used distributed data control to create new efficiencies and methods of collaboration.
Building on these case studies, we will present new web technologies that make flexible, global 3D collaboration possible for all. We will also propose a model for the application of such open platforms for the transformation of construction automation, services sourcing, and building delivery processes.
